Home Wiring Safety Tips

Electrical Safety Foundation  recommends that homeowners have their homes electrically inspected, particularly if:

* The home is 40 or more years old
* The home is 10 or more years old that has had major renovation, an addition or major new appliance
* New owner of a previously owned home

The following are some of the signs of home wiring electrical hazards:

* Power outages circuit breakers that frequently trip or fuses that often need replacement
* Dim and/or flickering lights
* Arcs and sparks flashes of light or shower of sparks anywhere in your electrical system
* Sizzles and buzzes unusual sounds from your electrical system
* Overheating overheated wires can give off an odor of hot insulation; switch plates or receptacle covers are hot to the touch or discolored from heat buildup
* Electrical shock's, any shock, even a mild tingle, may be warning of an electrical danger
* Overrated panel electrical panels with fuses or circuit breakers rated at higher currents than the capacity of their branch circuits.
* Damaged wire insulation cut, broken or cracked insulation

If you observe any of these signs in your home, call in a licensed electrician to inspect its wiring.

If you need a brand new Goodman, Ruud, Payne, Mitsubishi, or Fujitsu central air conditioner, ductless system, heater, heat pump, gas furnace, electric furnace, ductless mini split, or other central heating and cooling (hvac) equipment and want to save hundreds, even thousands of dollars, you’ve come to the right place!

I am not sure what type of system I need

There are two basic types of air conditioning/heating systems. The first is a "split system" where a portion of the system is located outdoors (the outdoor condenser) and another portion of the system is located indoors (either an air handler or furnace w/coil).

The three types of split systems are Air Conditioner w/Electric Heat, (where heating is not a big requirement based upon the climate), Air Conditioner w/Gas Furnace (where heating is a big requirement based upon the climate) and Air Conditioner w/Heat Pump (designed for climates where the low temperature rarely gets below 20 degrees F).

The other type of system is a "self contained" Package Type system and has only one component which is located outside. This application is used primarily in mobile and modular homes.

An innovative new product which allows a "split system" is called the Ductless Mini Split. This system is an excellent alternative to window or wall type units and does not require ductwork to operate. It is a perfect solution to room additions, bonus rooms, garage enclosures, etc.

I am replacing an existing system

The first step in determining the type of system to order is to establish the type of system you have in place now. Your replacement will be easiest if you order the same type of system you already have.

The two system types are either "split" or "package". You have a "split" system if you have an outdoor unit and indoor furnace or air handler. You have a "package" type system if it is all self-contained in the outdoor unit. Once you have determined the type of system in place, now determine the type of heat that you need.

The three most common types of heat are gas, electric, or heat pump. An electric heating system uses an electric resistance heat strip as the heat source which will be located inside the indoor unit. A heat pump transfers (or pumps) heat from the outdoor air into your home and uses an electric heat strip as a back up source. You have a heat pump if your outdoor unit runs in the winter time, or in the heating mode.

If you currently have a split system, you can select Air Conditioning Systems w/Electric Heat, Air Conditioning Systems w/Gas Furnace, or Heat Pump Air Conditioning Systems to choose the right system for your needs.

If you have a self contained system you can select Package Units to find the right system for your replacement. If you need to replace one component of a split sytem, select Outdoor Units, Indoor Air Handlers, Indoor Gas Furnaces or Indoor Evaporator Coils now.

I am adding a new system

Normally you will be adding a system under two circumstances. Your home may not now have air conditioning or you are remodeling or adding an addition to your home.

If you do not currently have an air conditioning system, but have a newer furnace and existing ductwork, you may be able to simply add an evaporator cooling coil to your furnace and install an outdoor air conditioner that will connect to the cooling coil via a set of copper refrigerant lines.

If you have radiant or baseboard heat, you are going to need a complete system including the indoor blower unit, the outdoor air conditioner, and a complete duct system. You will need to determine your cooling and heating capacities which is best accomplished through an on-site inspection by a certified professional. If you have additional questions, e-mail us or call our toll free number
If you are building an addition, or enclosing a garage or porch, chances are you will need to install a complete system including ductwork for proper heating and cooling. In most areas of the country, when you permit this addition, you will need to submit "energy calculations" which are completed either by the architect drawing up the plans or a heating and cooling contractor using a Residential Heat Load Calculation. These energy calculations will determine the capacities for both your heating and cooling systems based on your climate, square footage, construction type, etc.

In the event that the installation of ductwork is impractical or impossible, you may want to consider a ductless mini split.
